What he ended up doing was changing into his clothes to head to work, all the while thinking of ways to broach the subject that same evening, after dinner, once Cleo was tucked in bed and he had Thea to himself. Should he offer some wine? Ask her to have a seat on the couch? Light a fire? The fire would already be lit. Yes, that was good. He would light the fire before she even arrived. He might have to stoke it. She would sit on the couch with her glass of wine, watching him stoke the fire. He’d do it slowly, wondering if she was getting the hint that he was symbolically stoking their…

What the hell was he thinking?

Overthinking again, more like.

He would not be stoking the fire, he would fill his own wine glass and have a seat next to her, avoiding the study element of the evening and trying to find his way into relaxed conversation. He would ask about her day. Unless they’d already covered that at dinner…

Stop trying to control the scenario, he instructed impatiently, putting his pen down on the pad he’d been scribbling aimlessly on, eyes going to the computer screen, showing a patient’s journal that needed updating.

A knock on the door made him look up as it opened. Thea poked her head inside.

“Oh, hi,” he said, unable to keep the joy at seeing her out of his voice.

“Hi,” she said. “Can I come in?”

“No, sorry, very busy,” he replied, finger on the computer mouse and eyes back on the screen.

It had the desired effect when she laughed and stepped inside.

The door closed behind her, and the silence that filled the room was growing thicker by the second, especially as he swiveled his chair to face her properly.

Why had she come?

“How can I help you?” he asked, in his most professional voice.

“Well, I wanted to talk to you. About… the… about what happened. Between us. When we… you know, when we…”

“Kissed?” he filled in.

It was an understatement. They’d full-on made out.

“Yeah. That. I thought, you know, instead of us having dinner and pretending it didn’t happen and then studying, pretending it didn’t happen, and then me leaving…”

“You gave this a lot of thought, didn’t you?”

“Oh, yeah. Ran through the whole evening. Multiple scenarios.”

That made him chuckle, which seemed to relax her somewhat.

She was wearing one of those skirts she liked, and a blouse that had a crazy pattern on it. Her hair was unbrushed, but it typically was. She had a habit of running her hands through it, her fingers getting tangled in its tangles. He’d wanted to do the same more than once, see if his fingers would tangle too. And she had the boots on. He wondered if he’d fallen for her the moment she got her toe stuck and slammed her hands on that table.

“I just figured we wouldn’t be able to talk with Cleo awake, and then, once she was asleep, it’d be this awkward kind of… do we talk about it or do we just leave it.
